First public workshop on freeze set for Feb. 17

The first in a series of public workshops on the effects of the January 2010 record freeze is scheduled for 6-9 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Hillsborough Community College Trinkle Center in Plant City.

Southwest Florida Water Management District officials are looking for feedback from the public at the workshops. The District is seeking ideas on how to manage frost/freeze events in the Dover/Plant City area in the future.

The region experienced an unprecedented freeze event in January, with 11 consecutive days of below 34-degree temperatures. Many permit holders had to pump large quantities of water to protect strawberry, citrus and other commodities.

Many private residential wells failed as the pumping lowered the aquifer. The District declared an emergency on Jan. 27 to assist eastern Hillsborough County residents who were still without well water.
